WRVU is the University’s official student noncommercial, educational radio station. It broadcasts educational, informational, and entertainment programming to the campus and greater Middle Tennessee community.

HISTORY
WRVU began as a low-power AM carrier current station in 1953. At that time the station could only be heard by students in campus buildings. The station came under control of VSC in 1967. The station became an educational FM station at 90.3 on the FM dial in December, 1971 with a power of 10 watts. In 1980, the station began broadcasting in stereo. In 1985, WRVU increased its power to 14,500 watts. WRVU broadcasts at a frequency of 91.1 MHz FM. WRVU celebrated its 50th birthday in 2003.

AUDIENCE
WRVU-FM generally broadcasts 24-hours-per-day, year-round, with some limiting of its schedule during summer and other academic breaks. The station’s signal reaches all of Davidson County and each of the adjoining counties, or a broadcast radius equal to approximately 40-45 miles. The station’s programming reaches an estimated 20,000 people each week.

STAFF
The WRVU staff is comprised of approximately 10 students who make up the executive staff, including the Station Manager. Additionally, another 100 students, alumni, and University affiliates work as on-air program staff, technicians, and office assistants. The station also employs on a contract basis a professional chief engineer and retains the services of a Washington, D.C. based broadcast attorney.

FACILITIES
The WRVU studios, music libraries, and offices are located in the 182 suite in Sarratt Student Center. The station’s transmitter and antennae are located at the WSM tower at Nob Hill in Nashville. The WRVU inventory includes two fully-equipped broadcast studios (turntable, CD, mini-disk, cassette, live phone enabled), state-of-the-art digital editing equipment, an extensive music library, a listening room, and web and office computers.
