Student Media at Vanderbilt University is offering an exciting program for new students
Aug. 19-21 called Media Immersion 2009. Media Immersion is a three-day workshop in which participants receive hands-on training in areas ranging from reporting and writing to multimedia design and production. The workshop features a mix of informal teaching with original media content creation and evenings filled with activities. Enrollment in Media Immersion is competitive and will be limited to only 24 new Vanderbilt students. The workshop will be held primarily on campus in Student Media facilities, and participants will be permitted to move in to their campus residence halls three days before other new students.
Students selected to participate will work in small teams and receive instruction and coaching from
members of Vanderbilt Student Communications (VSC) staff, upperclass Vandy media students, and from some distinguished media professionals who are Vanderbilt alumni. The content produced by Media Immersion participants will be prominently featured in Vanderbilt’s award-winning student media outlets and seen by your classmates, upperclass students, and faculty and staff as they return to campus.
Vanderbilt first-year students who participated in this program since 2006 have reported live on MSNBC as freshmen, worked as interns with media such as The Washington Post, NBC, The Kansas City Star, BBC, and currently hold multiple leadership roles within Vandy student media operations.
Student media at Vanderbilt has a history of producing regional and national award-winning Web sites, publications and broadcasts. Many former students who learned their craft and launched their careers as staff members of VSC groups currently work as writers, editors, designers and producers at The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, CNN, U.S. News & World Report, Seventeen, Outside and for many other prominent media. We’ve also had countless VSC alumni transfer the skills gained in student media to law school, medical school, business school, and launch successful careers and entrepreneurial ventures.
We’re looking for students interested in journalism, multimedia, writing, design, photography, video, audio and Web production, but prior experience in media is not necessary.
The application deadline is July 1.
The 24 students selected will be provided early move-in, meals and transportation during the workshop.
There is a $100 registration fee for accepted participants, though a limited number of financial waivers are available.
We hope you’ll consider joining Student Media at Vandy. If you have questions, feel free to contact Chris Carroll (chris.carroll@vanderbilt.edu) or Media Immersion Director Paige Clancy (paige.clancy@vanderbilt.edu).
We look forward to having you join our community at Vanderbilt.
