The Vanderbilt Hustler is the University’s official student newspaper. It serves as forum for student opinions, provides coverage of news, sports and entertainment events, campus briefs and calendar information, and advertising.

HISTORY
The Hustler began as a weekly campus newspaper in 1888. "Published without faculty approval or review, the newspaper was sharp, critical, deliberately controversial. It aired issues on all sides, freely criticized faculty and the board, entered enthusiastically the debate over McTyeire’s successor, and was a sounding board for student complaints."1 The paper came under control of VSC in 1967. In 1998, the Hustler became financially independent by declining activities fee subsidies.

FREQUENCY
The Hustler is published three times a week, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, approximately 81 times during the academic year. The average paper is 12-16 pages with 6,000 copies printed. It is distributed free at 50 sites on campus, 5 sites in the surrounding community, and by mail to paid and complimentary subscribers.

STAFF
The Hustler staff is comprised of approximately 15 students who make up the editorial board, including Editor-in-Chief, Advertising Managers and Managing Editors. Additionally, some 25 students work as reporters, editors, photographers,
designers, advertising representatives, online staff, and office assistants. The Hustler additionally compliments its student staff with a professional Advertising Director and part-time professional Art Directors.

The Hustler hires on a contract basis an attorney for collections, and one distribution provider.

FACILITIES
The Hustler newsroom, editor’s office, production rooms and advertising offices are located in the 130 suite in Sarratt Student Center.
